About 42 Tokyo

Coding in Japan

In Japan, the general flow of education is to enter university and then get a job immediately after graduating. While in other countries it is often recommended to gain experience that cannot be obtained at school, Japanese companies may question you if there is a gap in your career. This psychological barrier makes it hard for someone who loves programming to learn as much as they would like. Rather than opposing this flow, 42 Tokyo exists as a new option. We hope that people will use 42 Tokyo to take advantage of their gap year, and that it will serve as valuable experience before entering the workforce. Students are generally taught by teachers, so the peer-to-peer approach of 42 students teaching each other is a fresh idea that we believe gained recognition with the opening of 42 Tokyo. At 42 Tokyo, students will learn not only programming but also « learn how to learn », and we would be happy to see more engineers who can learn independently. In a time where there is a growing concern about the shortage of engineers, we hope that 42 Tokyo, which offers free tuition regardless of age, educational background, or gender, will provide opportunities for more students to learn programming and become engineers.
